One of the most common problems that WordPress users face every day around the world is the image not uploading issue. Simple it may sound but it is one of the most irritating issues which delays the publication of your content. A major reason for this issue can happen due to incorrect file permission. Usually, WordPress files are stored on the web hosting servers. They require specific file and directory permissions to work. When the permissions are wrong you will not be able to read or upload files. You will see an error message Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2019/04. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

The primary reason for this issue can be a misconfiguration of hosting server such as the sudden running of a new upgrade. So, in this case, you haven’t done anything but you end up facing the image not uploading issue.

Troubleshooting this issue is easier. Now, we will see what should we do when we face such an error. You will have to use an FTP client to change the file permissions.

Step-1 First, connect to your website via FTP and
Step-2 Then go to /wp-content/ folder. Go to the uploads folder,[it is in this folder WordPress stores all your media file you’ve uploaded].
Step-3 Now right click on the uploads directory > then select File Permissions.

Step-4 Now you will see the file permissions dialog box.

Fix the Image Upload Issue in WordPress

Step-5 set the numeric value of file permissions for the uploads directory and all the subdirectories inside it to 744.

Step-6 Check the box which says Recurse into subdirectories option.

Step-7 Now click on the radio button Apply to directories only radio button.

Step-8 Click on the OK button

Now the FTP client will start applying the new file permissions to the directories.

Now we have to set file permissions for all the files in the uploads directory. Again we have to follow the similar route.

Step-1 Right click on uploads directory > select file permissions.
Step-2 In the file permissions dialog box, change the numeric value to 644.
Step-3 Now click on the radio button Apply to directories only radio button.
Step-4 Click on the OK button

Again FTP will apply the changes you made. Now, go back to the admin section and try uploading your image. This should necessarily solve your problem.
